Brigadier VP Singh, a man who is remembered globally for his achievements in Polo

Brigadier VP Singh
Brigadier VP Singh, born on 16th Oct 1940 and commissioned into the 61 Cavalry strode the Indian polo and equestrian scene like a colossus for over two decades and is remembered in global polo circles for his achievements even today. The only player to have a +7 handicap in post Independent India, he was revered for his domination of the polo ground. This was well recognised when he was conferred with the Arjuna Award in 1975. Equally accomplished in other equestrian disciplines his outstanding exploits in show jumping and three day eventing both in India and abroad are notable. It includes standing first on the Equitation Course at Cadre Noir in Saumur, France.

A Sword of Honour and gold medallist at the Indian Military Academy, he had a brilliant military career and commanded 61 Cavalry, his parent regiment and the President’s Bodyguard with great distinction. Under his tutelage as the national coach, the Indian team reached the finals of the World Cup in Argentina.

With the Brigadier VP Singh Memorial COA Polo Cup, the trophy stands in memory of an outstanding sportsman, a dedicated cavalryman, a great leader of men and an extraordinary modest human being who let his deeds do the talking for him. It has been presented by his elder sister Mrs Sushil Jai Singh, whose steadfast support and encouragement he greatly valued.

The Cavalry Officers Association recognises his great contribution to Indian sport with the institution of the annual Brigadier VP Singh Memorial COA Polo Cup.

The Brigadier VP Singh Memorial Cup came to life after the finals of Cavalry Gold Cup on 10th Feb 2019 at Jaipur Polo Ground.
