Abu Dhabi Polo Team survived an injury scare of one of their key players to record their third consecutive victory in the 17th Emirates Open Polo Championship which took place at the Ghantoot Racing & Polo Club. Argentina’s Santiago Cernadas, who required immediate medical treatment due to a head injury by the ball during the second chukker of their game against UAE Polo Team, came back in full force to score three goals and secured a pleasant 6-2 victory for the winners.

Maserati Polo Team bounced back from an earlier defeat to Abu Dhabi, to defeat Wolves Mahra Polo Team with final score of 10-8, presented by Maserati – Premier Motors, the Emirates Open Polo Championship is regarded as one of the province’s primary polo events.

The five-team 14-goal handicap tournament is being held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Falah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of Ghantoot Racing & Polo Club. Abu Dhabi Polo Team benefactor, Faris Al Yabhouni, accredited the team’s victory to good ‘espirit’, which was noticeable from the start of the match against Rashid Bin Drai’s UAE Polo Team.

Al Yabhouni said that the team succeeded due to team spirit and the bond they share, right rhythm which strengthened the team that led them to be effective. The main aim is to win trophy in succession. There was an incident involving Santiago Cernadas, who has been the form player in the tournament which commenced on December 10, Al Yabhouni commented that it’s a part of the play, one should stay focused and commended Santiago as being determined and scored 3 goals.

The edge over the other team was positivity and team spirit. Lucas Diego Alberdi continued his opulence of form to score 4 goals and lead Maserati to a hard-earned 10-8 victory over the Wolves. Alberdi, who plays off +6 goal handicaphas scored a tournament high 10 goals in three matches and has ensured that Maserati secure a spot in semi finals Alberdi was backed by fellow Argentinian’s Felipe Llorente and Gregorio Gelosi and Emirati player Abdullah Bin Dasmal scored 3 goals, 1 goal and 2 goals respectively.

The winners were up three goals to nil at the end of the first quarter and led all the way. The top player for the Wolves was Argentinian Diego Gallego, which accounted for six of his team’s eight goals on the day. Justo Coutinio and Tomas Iriarte were the other scorers.
