According to Museum of Polo and Hall of Fame website, “Herbie Pennell was the consummate professional polo club manager and horseman. He was the long-term manager of Palm Beach Polo and Country Club in the 1970s and 1980s. He was a pioneering mentor to many polo managers and was 'the glue' that held a great many players and clubs together over his many years managing both small and large clubs - and starting and sustaining so many people throughout his lifetime. He started hundreds of people in polo and was generous with his time and support to people from all walks of life. Herbie won the Indoor Twelve Goal in 1955 and the Delegates and Monty Waterbury Cups in 1956. He was handicapped at 6 Outdoors and 8 Indoors and won numerous USPA and club events."


Fresh for the high-goal season and eager to ring in the new year with their first tournament win, Dutta Corp faced Patagones in the finals of Herbie Pennell Cup in the opening Sunday match on December 30 at the International Polo Club, Florida. Dutta Corp played with Timmy Dutta (+2), Gringo Colombres (+7), Lucas Diaz Alberdi (+5) and Kris Kampsen (+6) while Patagones, on the other hand, played with Joaquin Avendano (+2), Benjamin Avendano (+3), Tomas Garcia del Rio (+7) and Santiago Toccalino (+8).

Establishing themselves early in the first chukker with strategic offensive play, Dutta Corp started off strongly with two consecutive goals from Gringo Colombres. Lucas Diaz Alberdi followed up quickly and scored the third goal for Dutta Corp. Tomas Garcia del Rio converted a penalty into a goal and the game advanced with Dutta Corp’s aggressive advances, which forced Patagones to back off and concentrate on the defence. The score after the second chukker was 6-3 with Dutta Corp in the lead. The third chukker saw Patagones silence their rivals. Patagones didn't allow Dutta Corp to score a goal in the third chukker and the scoreboard showed a score of 6-5 after the first half.

Lucas Diaz Alberdi fired the first goal of the fourth chukker to which Tomas Garcia del Rio replied back with a goal. After Santiago Toccalino and Kris Kampsen converted a penalty each for the respective teams, the scoreboard showed a score of 8-7 with Dutta Corp in the lead. Patagones’ persistence paid off with two goals to one by Dutta Corp. Joaquin Avendano made a 150-yard run to score his first goal. The score was levelled at 9 - 9 with the sixth chukker left in play. Diaz Alberdi struck the first goal of the last chukker but was matched by Santiago Toccalino’s penalty conversion for Patagones Polo team.

As time wound down, both the teams were desperate to avoid the extra chukker. The 30-second horn blew, Gringo Colombres started making a run from the half court, his eyes were set on the goal-post. Trying to beat the defence and time, he chipped a powerful shot towards the goal. As he hit the shot, the crowd turned towards the goal, all eyes were towards the goal-post. Breaking his sweat, defender ran towards the goal. The scoreboard showed a mere 5 seconds left on the clock as the ball went through the goal and Gringo Colombres scored the winning goal in the last thirty seconds of the match. Dutta Corp lifted the Herbie Pennell Cup after defeating Patagones by 11 - 10. Gringo Colombres was named the Most Valuable Player award and Fino Conejo was the Best Playing Pony.
