For sportholics in Singapore, Water Polo is not just any other sport instead it has evolved to be a symbol of perseverance and dedication in the country. Blending the determination in the younger generation, Singapore Swimming Association came up with the programme of Flippa Ball.

Understanding Flippa Ball The game is a modified form of water polo for junior players of both the genders and all age groups. The game is undoubtedly played in pools which are built between 0.8m to 1.2m getting a depth decent enough to swim yet shallow to stand. The main modification that the game carries is that the players can catch the ball using both the hands but passing or shooting can be done only with one hand.

Being a non-contact game, Flippa Ball is fast-paced without knocks and either team who scores most wins the game.

  • The game requires two teams, each with the equal amount of players, carrying a minimum of 6 players and 1 goalkeeper on both ends.
  • The game consists of four quarters, each of five minutes with a span of three minutes between every quarter.
  • The game initiates with the referee starting the ball in the middle of the pool while the players line along the goal line. The players move only when the referee signals them to do so, at which a player swims in the middle to pass the ball towards to the teammates.
  • The players can catch the ball from both hands but have to use only one hand while passing it.
  • Players are allowed to walk, run or swim without the possession of the ball, but once they have the ball, they are allowed only to swim.
  • Tackling, blocking and pulling is not allowed.
  • The ball must remain above the surface of the water all the time.
  • A free throw will be allowed to the opponent team at each breaking of the rule.
  • A goal will be counted only when the ball crosses the goal line.

Where to learn? Singapore Water Polo conducts a regular programme “Train-the-trainer”. The course is to enhance the skills of the would-be coaches so that they could start their own Flippa Ball teams.

The swim coaches which are NROC registered can enroll for the programme, budding the flair of sports.
