The game ended 13-0 in Oxford’s favour; Harrow came out on top against school rivals Eton.
The La Martina Varsity Match every year witnesses Oxford and Cambridge taking their institutional rivalry to the field of polo. The match has always been played open, with utter disregard to the teams’ handicaps.
This year, however, the handicaps of the two teams were almost equal. But the game had a contrasting story to tell.
Oxford fired 13 goals past the Cambridge defense, who in response could not manage even a single goal in the entire game. Louis Madden, Oxford’s captain, was handed over the La Martina trophy and along with it, the Most Valuable Player award.
His 15-year-old mare, Skittles, received the Best Playing Pony award for the day for assisting him in the 1st chukker wherein he scored 4 goals and then went on to use it in the 3rd chukker as well.
Oxford had a comfortable lead of 5-0 by the end of first 7 minutes. They maintained the same momentum throughout the remaining game and finished it with a scoreline of 13-0. Cambridge managed to create a few good chances going forward but was unable to convert on any of the occasions
In the traditional Eton and Harrow school rivalry game, Harrow managed to come out on top with a score of 3 - 2.5. Much to the delight of the spectators, both teams created several chances and produced a closely fought contest with only a half-goal difference between the winning and the losing side.
To add to the glory of Harrow school, the Old Harrovians registered a 6.5 - 2 win over the Old Etonians. In the newly introduced Ladies Alumni game, Cambridge Ladies got the better of Oxford Ladies by 5 goals to 1.
Following the winning ways of their ladies were the Cambridge Old Blues who stepped up to win the Old Blues game, restoring some pride for the institution, by beating Oxford Old Blues 2.5 - 2.
