Historically a male dominated sport , Polo was disguisedly infiltrated by women and since then polo women’s cup has gathered a huge attraction. The ride of a galloping horse, the flying of mallets in the air with a ball whizzing by your head at 100 miles per hour is life for the beautiful female patrons of polo.
The opening day of the Polo Women Cup took place on Friday at Saint Tropez Polo Club, hosting the tournament final on Sunday with a total of six 14-goal teams. This high-level competition featured international women’s teams from Germany, Italy, France, Argentina, Malaysia and South Africa. The Polo Club Saint-Tropez is guided by its spirit of solidarity, by supporting the associations dreams which proposes to dedicate this women’s tournament to a charity work.
The semifinals of the Polo Women Cup took place on Saturday at Polo Club de Saint Tropez’ Field 4, were the Dark Ice fought ferociously since the very beginning against Polo World. Team Italia Equitatus started with a 2.5 goals advantage, but Maple Leaf had in Lia Salvo one of the best players in the world. She was well accompanied by her teammates during the four chukkers. But it wasn’t until the last period that Maple Leaf managed to seal the win. Great start by The JK7 had a great start by leading 5-1 at halftime from Hazel Jackson. But from then on she was taken by Camila Rossi, and Jeanine Hugo leading the scoresheet for her team. A penalty 3 on the extra chukker gave Brigade One a ticket for the final.
Sunday at Saint Tropez Polo Club, saw the finals of the Polo Women Cup with a total of six 14-goal teams took part in the tournament, accompanied by a Sunday Polo event, with many guests enjoying the games and the Restaurant Polo 1999.
Polo World started was seen at an advantage of 1.5 goals, but the JK7 team found their way back. The match was not even at halftime when the JK7 star Hazel Jackson showed up to seal the win. In the match between Dark Ice 3 and 9.5 Team Italia Equitatus, Team Italia Equitatus showed solid teamwork and played fast, open polo to get the convincing win.
In the time of the main final Maple Leaf was seen as the favourite for title because of their handicap (14 goals). Brigade One started with a 2-0 advantage, but in the first minutes Maple Leaf had already tied up the game. In the second chukka, after a good score, and for the first time they were ahead in the scoreboard, taking advantage on Brigade One missing some opportunities. The match was determined in the third chukka, where Maple Leaf scored a 3-0 lapse. The whole team of Maple Leaf showed a great level, all of them enhanced by their ace, Lia Salvo.
The next tournament at Saint Tropez Polo Club will be held in the International Polo Cup, that kicks off on Thursday, July 6th, and will feature two different 10 & 15 goal levels.
