Dia de la Revolucion de Mayo

E

very year, people of Argentina celebrate the May Revolution Day or Dia de la Revolucion de Mayo on May 25 by taking on the streets and participating in every event from concerts to marches. The country celebrates a whole week prior to this day from May 18 to May 25 commemorating the political incidents that resulted in the May Revolution Day ultimately leading to the independence of the country from the reign of Spain. The day in the history of Argentina is also known as National Day for it was on this day that the Argentinian government came into working.

To celebrate the day the people of Argentina prepare traditional cuisines in the praise and acknowledgment of the leaders who made the day possible for today’s free Argentina. Adding to this, are the special services that are conducted in the church along with plays enacted at the Colon Theater in Buenos Aires, the capital city.

The participation from the government also grabs the notice, for it is mandatory for the government officials and representatives to be present for the events occurring around the city so as to deliver speeches in the festivals. Hopping spark to the days of glory, most of the transportation services are also declared free which helps the people to move around the city more freely taking part in the events that start from noon and last up to late evening.

May Revolution Day came up as the consequence of historical, social and political incidents that took place in the capital city, Buenos Aires. The burden of all these incidents leads to the budding of the oldest non-Spanish government in the country. During the colonial rule of Spanish Empire, Buenos Aires was the capital of Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata, which was a colony under the empire, inclusive of the present day nations of Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Uruguay. The demand to establish a self-government administration came up when the middle, as well as upper-class Argentinian citizens, raised voice against the Spanish controlled government. This rebellion resulted in the eviction of Viceroy Baltasar Hidalgo de Cisneros for the commencement of self-government on May 25, 1810, which started to be lionized as Revolution Day.

The Revolution was considered to be the initial step by the people of Argentina towards independence, which was a burst out of harsh strains that the Spain Peninsular War had for two years on the minds of the country people.
