Every year Careyes Polo Club, situated in the private gated resort on the Pacific Ocean south of Puerto Vallarta, has a women polo tournament. Players were welcomed from all over Mexico, Canada, and the USA to visit the club and appreciate the beach, warm climate and unwind, and, of course, play polo. Two groups played 8 chukkers of polo over the 2-day tournament finishing in a tie.
The Stick and Ball Co. group of Elizabeth Goodwin Welborn, founder and maker of the boutique garments line, Anabel Colterjohn, understudy at St Andrews University in Scotland, Giorgio Brignone, proprietor and author of the Careyes Club and Manuel Rios, local player and coach, were hollowed against Agua Alta group of Alberico Ardissone, understood name in the Mexican polo world, Maxime Moellhausen, initially from Austria, Angela Colterjohn, event rider and player from Toronto, and Hans Giebeler, long time occupant of Careyes.
Play was forward and backward with Welborn scoring 3 goals the principal day driving her group to a 5-3 advantage after the initial 4 chukkers. Goals for the Agua Alta group were Moellhausen, Colterjohn, and Giebeler all with one. The second day Agua Alta was out to win and scored 2 goals in the primary chukker to tie the game – after that – the score was even after each chukker with a shootout to decide the champ.
All players took an interest in the shootout with going first the 40 yard and afterward to the 30 yard to decide a victor with Agua Alta coming up on top. Elizabeth Welborn was named MVP for the tournament. For the night exercises players were appeared on the 30 foot by 40-foot screen in the Plaza de los Caballeros of their play for the end of the week.
The Careyes Polo Club season is from November 15 to the finish of April with tournaments arranged throughout the year. Players and families can appreciate the polo with an occupant proficient for lessons or simply appreciate a beach ride on the unblemished Teopa beach minutes from the fields.
