How And Why Of Baselworld

aselworld, the world’s biggest and most important event for the watch and jewellery industry, where you can explore and discover innovations, get to know about new trends and bask on the golden opportunity to avail valuable personal contacts and all of that through this one single amazing platform, that took place from March 23 to 30 in Switzerland, 2017.

It has been 100 years now, since remarkable creations are being exhibited to people from all around the world every year at this Watch and Jewelry Show. Innovation and design take the center stage while creative ideas and novel designs are celebrated at Baselworld. Spanning over eight days, Basel transformed into a hot hub of the watch and jewelry industry: alluring somewhere in the range of 1,800 exhibitors from 45 nations around the world. The world’s most renowned and revered brands, the most eminent purchasers and the most compelling international media were present here at this single platform.

Baselworld is unique as it is the only show that congregates all the important players from watchmakers to jewelers, from diamonds, pearls and gemstones dealers to machines and supply industry, consolidating them all under one roof, once in a year. Creativity and innovation reflect from all corners of the show. Apart from the luxury items from the premium brands, inquisitive buyers find products in all price ranges, including precious stones, pearls, components, machinery and packaging. The show is staged at the topmost level over a surface area of 160,000 square meters. It attracts over 100,000 visitors annually and continues to be the industry’s largest and most intense hotspot for networking.

The history of the show goes back to 1917 with the opening of the first Schweizer Mustermesse Basel (muba), of which a segment was dedicated to watches and gems. 1925 muba welcomed a few watch manufacturers. In 1931 the Schweizer Uhrenmesse (Swiss Watch Show) was first held in a devoted space. After 1972’s Europe’s exhibition, organizations from France, Italy, Germany, and the United Kingdom were additionally welcomed. In the year 1983 the show was renamed to BASEL and two numerals indicated the display year, e.g., BASEL 83.

During 1986, organizations from outside Europe were incorporated interestingly, mirroring the expanded number of guests from outside Europe. In 1995 the show was renamed to BASEL 95 – The World Watch, Clock and Jewelry Show. Year 1999 witnessed another lobby with 36,000 square meters show space being included.

In 2003, the show again changed its name to Baselworld, The Watch and Jewelry Show. In 2004, with the incorporation of another hall complex, the show zone reached out to 160,000 square meters, drawing in more than 89,000 guests annually.
