Breeders’ Cup World’s Championship is an annual series of Grade 1 thoroughbred horse races, operated by Breeders Cup Ltd. From 2008 to 2014, the event was held either at Churchill Downs or Santa Anita Park. In 2015, Keeneland was selected as the host track for the first time. The year marked the initial opportunity to win the so-called Grand Slam of thoroughbred racing.
In 2016, Santa Anita had the record upon hosting the Breeders’ Cup Turf for the 9th time. The race was run for a distance of 1 ½ miles on the grass for horses 3 years and older. The race attracted the top turf horses’ talent from Europe and North America to compete for a $4 million purse. The winner for last year 2016 was Highland Reel with jockey Seamus Heffernan.
This year in 2017, the grand event will be held at Del Mar for the first time. The Breeders’ Cup is experiencing many ups and downs as talented race horses compete for a spot in one of the 13 championships races. Great expectations are from Heavenly Love, Roy H and Separation Powers in comparison to Kelly’s Humour, Zhukova and Rally Cry.
