Away from the hustle-bustle of city life, in the central Parioli district of Rome, lies a polo club, from where the thumping sound of heavy horse hooves and distant ‘clacks’ of mallets hitting the ball in
lush green open field can be heard. Reach the club and you will witness an elegant and classic game of polo in action.
Founded in 1930, Rome polo club, is the oldest polo club in Italy. Home to the regular games and events, it is not very far from the Colosseum and the Vatican. The club is open to public once the polo Season arrives. Becoming a member of the club is a tough task as members are usually the descendants of existing members.
However, there are two options to become a member of the club.
One can become a member of the club if he is a proficient polo player.
A ‘domanada scritta’ is essential and two existing members from the club must grant one worthy of joining or an enrollment fee of 15,000 Euros plus an annual fee of 1,000 Euros has to be submitted.
The club also shares its space with “Pony Club” where children can learn skills of playing polo on regular basis and can aspire to enter the glamorous and elegant world of noble sport-Polo.
Polo started in Italy in 1915 on the Island of Brioni and became a huge scene in Puntala,Tuscany in the late 60s till the 80s. The top players of that time were Pasquini and Guglielmi.
With the passage of time, the game died down a bit but regained its pace with the advent of new tournaments and events.
