The Silver Cup Finals: UAE or Ghantoot?

The final day of The Silver Cup saw two exciting fixtures with the Subsidiary final between Zedan and Mahra for the Hildon Cup and the title match between UAE Polo and Ghantoot. Both of these matches were crowd pleasers which went undecided till the final minute.

Match Description: Zedan v/s Mahra

Final Score: 9-8.5

Chukker wise progression: 4-1.5|6-3.5| 7-4.5|8-6.5|9-8.5

In the first encounter of the day, the two teams of Zedan and Mahra played in the subsidiary final of the Silver Cup tournament. The winner was presented with the Hildon Cup. The game was a very closely contested with Zedan emerging victorious with only half a point in separating them from Mahra.

Zedan took a lead of 2.5 points in the early part of the first half and didn’t relinquish the same until the fifth. Team patron Amr Zedan scored the highest 4 goals of the match, all of them during the initial half of the game. However, Mahra always stayed in the game. After the first chukker, they answered each goal of Zedan with at least one of their own.

Mahra successfully captured the lead when Pelayo Berazadi scored one in the start of the 6th chukker. The score was 8.5-8 going into the final minutes of the game. It seemed as though Zedan would lose the game even after dominating the majority of the game.

But, Zedan’s Rauli Laplacette came through for them, scoring the final goal of the encounter in the closing minutes of the 6th chukker and edging out Mahra by ½ point.

Final Score: 10-9

Chukker wise progression: 2-2| 5-3 |5-7| 7-9| 10-9

The first chukker began with both the teams scoring two goals each. The lead changed hands multiple times following the first chukker. The 1st half ended with Ghantoot leading by 2 with the score 7-5. When the game resumed in the 4th chukker, UAE started strong and scored 4 times to establish a commanding lead going into the 5th chukker. Tomas Panelo scored two goals to level the field. Following this, UAE patron Sheikha Maitha bint Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum fired another goal, followed by one more from Alejandro Muzzio. Slipping the lead for the first time in the match triggered Ghantoot back into action and they were able to score 4 successive goals in the next few minutes of the game. With 3 minutes remaining in the game, it was still anybody’s game at this point with the score at 9-9. It was UAE’s Alejandro Muzzio who came through to save the game for his team by closing the game with another field goal.
