Valerie Halford Memorial Trophy Held in Guards Polo Club

Equines ran wild in the first open tournament of the 2025 season, played in the memory of the famous photographer Valerie Halford, who dedicated his life to the sport.

Ten teams enthusiastically entered this year’s Valerie Halford Memorial Trophy, a 12-goal tournament, challenging players at every level. The event was flooded with competitive matches, and each match was brimming with unmatched potential. Here’s a recap of the closest knockout games with the highest stakes.

Semi-Final 1: Cool Hooves Polo vs Ainsley Saddlery 

Date: 3 May 

The first semi-final game was a valour-filled fight between Cool Hooves Polo and Ainsley Saddlery. The former team looked in great form, from the start as they managed to outdo their opponents. Despite fighting hard to make a comeback, Ainsley Saddlery lagged in points, not being able to get past the strong defences of Cool Hooves Polo.

Winner: Cool Hooves Polo ( 10-7 )

Semi-Final 2: Tchogan / Polo Performance vs The Mirror Polo Team 

The second semi-final was between Tchogan/Polo Performance and The Mirror Polo Team. It was comparatively a much closer game than the first semi-final. Fortune favoured Tchogan as they were able to secure the win by just one point, kicking The Mirror Polo Team out of the tournament.

Winner: Tchogan / Polo Performance ( 7-6 )

Sub-Semi-Final 1: Mad Dogs vs Kusnacht Practice 

Date: 3 May 

It was time for the first sub-semi-final game between Mad Dogs and Kusnacht Practice. Both teams had a defensive approach to not wanting to concede too big of a lead to anyone. As a result, only 10 goals were scored in all, out of which Mad Dogs had the better part. They scored six out of the ten goals to go further into the tournament, knocking out Kusnacht Practice.

Winner: Mad Dogs ( 6-4 )

Sub-Semi-Final 2: Four Quarters vs Oriflamme 

The second sub-semi-final presented us with an intensely close game between Four Quarters and Oriflamme. This close game brought everyone to the edge of their seats. The players from Four Quarters were able to hold their nerves pretty well towards the end of the game, which helped them finish with one extra point on the scoreboard.

Winner: Four Quarters ( 7-6 )

Sub-Final: Four Quarters vs Mad Dogs

Date: 5 May 

Four Quarters and Msg Dogs were ready to face it off to give themselves that one last push over the finish line of the sub-final. The game got really close and intense as both teams looked quite evenly matched. However, during the most anxious times of the match, Four Quarters put themselves in a much better spot mentally and cleared this game with a close win of just one point. 

Winners: Four Quarters ( 7-6 )

Final: Cool Hooves Polo vs Tchogan / Polo Performance

Date: 5 May 

It was finally time for two of the most consistent teams, Cool Hooves Polo and Tchogan/Polo Performance, to battle for the prestigious title of the 12-goal Valerie Halford Memorial Trophy. The spectators were ready, and so were the players from both teams. Both teams kept their head in the game as soon as the bell rang, and Cool Hooves Polo started scoring goals whenever they got a chance to. Tchogan tried to retaliate, but the team was in a race against time and could not complete the job in time. Ultimately, it was Cool Hooves Polo who secured this year’s title of the Valerie Halford Memorial Trophy.
