The club before the start of the championship has declared the teams entering the 2017 Jaeger-LeCoultre Gold Cup for the British Open Polo Championship. The draw to decide the match play in the opening league of this year’s tournament took place in the Jaeger Lecoultre’s flagship boutique at 13 Old Bond Street, London on the evening of 12th June.
King Power Polo Team has been ruling the cup since two years, having won for the first time in 2015 and repeating their success in 2016.
One of the favourites of the local crowd in 2016, El Remanso, based at Ambersham ,and owned by Charlie Hanbury which is joined by Ollie Cudmore playing off 5 goals, England captain James Beim and James Harper. Also based at Ambersham is Charlie’s brother, George Hanbury who has joined with 8 goal patron Fred Mannix Jr in bringing in the Sommelier team into 2017 Jaeger LeCoultre Gold cup. Another team contesting in the consecutive 4th year is Michael Bickford’s La Indiana team. His team line up includes Agustin Merlos and the US team captain Nic Roldan, who are joined by former England captain Luke Tomlinson.
Jaeger LeCoultre has enjoyed a rich history with polo ever since the creation of the Reverso Watch in 1931. It has been in partnership with the Cowdray Polo Club as the Official Timekeeper since 2006 and since 2015 is celebrated as the Jaeger LeCoultre Gold Cup for the British Open Polo Championship.
Jaeger-LeCoultre and Cowdray have also started a new tradition, where every year four specially engraved Reverso watches are presented to honour the cup winners. Engraved with the date of the tournament and the revered Gold Cup, it is a sign of a strong bond between the club and Jaeger LeCoultre.
