Also known as Yi Peng, the Chang Mai Lantern Festival is an annual Buddhist religious occurrence celebrated to pay homage to Lord Gautam Buddha by releasing lanterns into the night sky. People from across Thailand gather to soak up vibrant, vivacious religious parades–featuring traditional musicians and dancers– taken out in the streets crisscrossing this mountainous northern Thai city. With roots in the ancient Lanna Kingdom, Buddhists pay obeisance to Lord Buddha, seeking his benediction–though traditionally, it was celebrated to mark the end of the monsoon season.
