First she joined sustainable textiles with unique elements such as recycled metals, vintage charms,Pebbles and stones found during her travel and pictured off the evolution to express them in her designs. And then later on the textile based designs led her to focus on metal jewellery crafted by hand in silver, bronze, gold and brass which included precious and semi precious stones and pearls and valuable stones from the oceans and rare spots in the world and create original shapes, texture and subtle color tones. The susceptible textile jewellery mixes and blends with the distinctive materials with organic and recycled silk ribbons, linen and bamboo strings. Each piece is uniquely crafted with pearls and beads, ornamented with shells and pebbles and is based on the fact that we need to save nature and preserve its beauty.

When asked about how nature inspires her to make jewellery she replied, “ I see something in the wild, and when I go back to my studio, i have a desire ravaging within me to design a new piece that I just observed.” She continues describing her methodology of these observations which include normal behaviour of creatures that fascinates her in a unique way. Her eyes see what other people miss in their sight. It can be a creature along the shoreline, a dolphin diving into the ocean, a wavelet, a sunfish, a snail, a rock or a plant of a particular shape. Other times her inspiration comes from the dreams that she visualizes, any jewellery that can resemble a particular natural form, and pen it on the paper. The reason behind the majestic touch in her artwork is her vision. Maddalena states “ there are occasions when the material speaks to me. I start working with an ingot of silver, and all of a sudden, something comes to life….”. She has an idea of translating whatever she sees in nature to translate into unique ornaments for the body. Her pieces exemplify that style and sustainability can go simultaneously without degrading the quality and its uniqueness.

EVERY PIECE HAS ITS OWN STORY

Maddalena tells about her connectivity to every piece of her jewellery. She recalls her adventures while she got the idea of the design of that piece in between the blue ocean in her family of whales and dolphins. Every fragment of her jewellery is connected to her life as a marine biologist and her affection towards nature. Each sample has its own unique name and its own virtues by which it has come into existence and will decorate a body in its future. In her book Dolphin Confidential Of A Field Biologist, she recounts a true and touching story that once a bottlenose dolphin lead her boat offshore which enable her research team and herself to save a young girl from drowning which more looked like a suicide attempt. She recalls that incredible day which not just inspired her to design a single piece but also was a source of her entire versatile aqua collection.

THE JEWELLERY SEEMED TO BE EVOLVED OUT OF DREAMS TO TRANSLATE INTO NATURAL ORNAMENT

When asked about her favourite, closest inventions Maddalena replies “The Ba-Lena(“whale” in english) jewellery series is the closest to my heart”. A whale diving freely into the open ocean stimulated her passion to create this unique, organic looking handmade collection that is also a statement against whales and dolphins being kept in a captivity. Thousand of hours at sea in company of whales and dolphins, she began to know them by sight, and gradually they became her family, an integral part of her life. She learnt their needs, not only for space but also companionship, and she witnessed their fluid, complex societies which in a lot of ways resembles our own. That is why Ba-Lena necklaces, bracelets and rings are her favourite of all her inventions.
