The Governor of Manipur Najma Heptulla awarded the trophy to the coveted winners of The Women's Polo which is scheduled from January 17 to 21 every year. The governor expressed her happiness to be a part of the tournament which is organized at one of the oldest living Polo ground, Mapal Kangjeibung in Imphal. She also added that the Manipur is the birthplace of Modern Polo which has been evolved from its older counterpart, Sagol Kangjie.

She even said that it had been heartening to see that the current edition of polo had been featuring women's polo team from four continents, whose different counterparts played with Indians here. Polo enthusiasts had been coming to this remote part of the world for their love and passion for the sport. The Sagol Kangie was earlier played by rules known as Kangjierol which have undergone drastic changes and the game is now played under the IPA rules. The pony for the game of Manipur Polo is a recognized breed of India which is well built and graceful. These ponies are semi-wild and always has a great pressure on them due to the shrinking of the grazing grounds and grasslands.

This breed needs to be saved from extinction by renewed efforts to save the environment. This tournament is a hope to highlight the grave issues of wildlife and nature through sports and tell people importance of wildlife in sports like Polo.
